The York County History Center is partnering with several area history organizations to present special programming that recognizes Black History Month 2017. This year’s events center around the theme of the Underground Railroad in York County, including a two-day regional symposium planned for March 31 and April 1, 2017. Details on all of these programs are available at www.yorkhistorycenter.org.

Second Saturday Lecture Series – “Henry Box Brown a Slave No More”
Sat., February 11, 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Historical Society Museum, Library & Archives
Author Judy Wolfman will tell the story behind her latest book A Slave No More. In this historical fiction work, Wolfman drew upon the true story of Henry “Box” Brown, a slave who shipped himself north from Virginia to Philadelphia in a 3 ft. x 2.5 ft. x 2 ft. box. Wolfman will discuss the incredible 27 hour journey Brown endured, as well as his life as a slave and later as an abolitionist speaker in the north. Wolfman, a retired elementary teacher, has written 14 books, nine plays, and over 200 magazine articles and short stories.
York Civil War Roundtable
Wed., February 15, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Historical Society Museum, Library & Archives
Local historians and authors James McClure and Scott L. Mingus present "The Ground Swallowed Them Up: Slavery and the Underground Railroad in York County, PA." This is the first book published that fully addresses the Underground Railroad in York County. Surprising, considering that from the early 1800s through the early Civil War period, York County was a significant pathway for runaway slaves seeking freedom. Historians Scott Mingus and Jim McClure will discuss the several networks that developed which include a Quaker system, another one involving free blacks, and a third with several of York's leading Pennsylvania Germans as conductors. Free and open to the public.
