Miniature Book Abundant Genealogy: As Presented by Mary Craven Hawley

Just imagine, if you will, the genealogy of three families written in a miniature book--which describes this situation precisely. A lot of information, mainly birth dates, were put in this tiny book (if you can believe it!). The Craven, Griswold, and Hawley descendants appear to be active on genealogy websites and it appears as if some dates might be clarified for today's researcher by their ancestor (possibly Mary S. Craven)!

Dew-Drops was published by the American Tract Society of New York, circa 1847 as a devotional calendar. It was not meant as a family record and as you can imagine, reading tiny entries proves somewhat difficult. In addition to the size, Dew Drops presents another problem in that it is fragile. As such I cannot take photographs beyond those you see here. Scanning the book would destroy it. I have been as careful as possible to accurately record the information within, but there are some guidelines of which the reader should be aware.

Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery (Part 6): Random Notes Concerning Heckewelder

The following pieces of information might be common information among the Heckewelder family and if so, it will be a little wasted time. However, just in case the information is not common knowledge, here it is. Unless a pleasant surprise makes itself known, these are the last of the added notations concerning the Heckewelder family. The "page 47" referred to in these notes is shown in Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery (Part 2), if needed.

Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery (Part 4) : Beckel Family Notes

In Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery (Part I), much of the discussion centered around Thora M. Beckel who owned the book in 1921. Unless a surprise occurs, the following pictures and accompanying notations, will be the last information about the Beckels noted in the book. As it passed through many hands in these intervening years, there are still notes written within concerning the Heckewelders, Leiberts, Goepps, and others. PS--The notation in red reads, "Mother to CFB 1872-May 9, 1933" The same notation is made on the third image except it reads "Father" as opposed to "Mother."

Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery (Part 2): Heckewelder, Leibert, and Fenstermacher

Beyond the information about Thora Beckel, the next bits of extra information found in the Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery are "corrections." They are found on page 47 under the entry for John Heckewelder. Please keep in mind, this is not my research, but information and corrections written by others researching their families. (For a link to Part I and a more informative description of the intent of this post, click Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery (Part I):) Most of the information is legible, except perhaps this portion which reads, "....State of Ohio. His eldest [2nd] daughter Sarah married Joseph Rice, his second [3rd] daughter Susan...."

The next page with additional information is found on page 61. By "Levering" the author is no doubt referencing Joseph Mortimer Levering's A History of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 1741-1892, published in 1903. In this case the researcher fills out information around the entry for Catharine Leibert. It should be clearly visible in the picture below. Best of luck on your search, HK 5 July 2015

Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery: Notations about Thora M. Beckel / E. Pauline Leibert Stocker (Part I)

In a previous article, Don't Judge a Book by its Cover: The Drawing Book of Verena Fehr, we established that occasionally a book gives in unexpected ways. Such is the case with this Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery of Bethlehem, Pa. 1742-1910 by Augustus Schultze, D.D., L.H.D. Lancaster, Pa 1912. From a historical standpoint the title had already caught my eye, but when I opened it and saw the wealth of unpublished information, I just had to share.* We also decided that this kind of information would make a fantastic category here on Passed time, "Genealogy from Books." This is not to include the printed information, but the old notations genealogists, researchers, and historians, often provide in their research material.
