Free Screening of Harriet Tubman Film Celebrates Black History Month
Locally produced short "Carry Me Home" will be presented by LancasterHistory.org
Lancaster, PA (February 13, 2017) – On February 16 LancasterHistory.org will host a special screening of the locally produced short film Carry Me Home – A Tribute to Harriet Tubman in recognition of Black History Month. The film follows historic figure Harriet Tubman and her encounter with one enslaved family that she leads to freedom. Tubman leads the family through life-threatening trials causing them all to question whether or not freedom is worth the price they must pay to obtain it. A panel discussion will follow featuring Dr. Amanda Kemp, Rev. Louis Butcher of Bright Side Baptist Church, and Josh Henry, the film’s director.

Dr. Amanda Kemp is a professor, speaker, poet, and playwright specializing in race, history and culture. She graduated from Stanford University and earned a PhD from Northwestern University. She has taught at the University level for over a decade and served as a Pennsylvania Commonwealth Lecturer. The founder of Theatre for Transformation, Kemp has reached over 25,000 people in her artistic and academic residencies at schools, colleges, and faith gatherings, and is the recipient of a number of accolades, including the John Gardner Fellowship from Stanford University, People United to Save Humanity (PUSH) Award, and the NAACP Lancaster Civic Award. She is currently touring INSPIRA: The Power of the Spiritual and has recently published the book Say the Wrong Thing, a collection of essays on social justice. When not traveling, Kemp resides in Lancaster, PA with her husband violinist Michael Jamanis, their five children, and chocolate lab Jake. For speaking, residency, or her Tribe of the H.E.A.R.T. Louis A. Butcher, Jr., a native of Lancaster, PA, was educated in the Lancaster School System, graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and from the Lancaster Bible College with a Master of Arts in Ministry. He has also received honorary doctorates from Franklin and Marshall College, and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. He has held various positions in the corporate world, including serving as a sales representative for Hamilton Watch Company and as Corporate Employment Manager for that firm. He worked in retailing for ten years with John Wanamaker Department Stores, holding the positions of Branch Personnel Manager, Operations Manager and Divisional Merchandise Manager. He spent nearly twenty years with the County of Lancaster as Executive Director of the County Human Relations Commission. He has also operated his own business. He is an organizer of the Bright Side Baptist Church and has been its Pastor for the past thirty years. Pastor Butcher is married to the former Katie A. Rogers and they are parents of four children and seven grandchildren. They were also foster parents for thirty years, helping to raise more than twenty children.

Josh Henry is the director, writer, editor, and co-producer of Carry Me Home, a production of LampHouse Films. Josh has a strong history of storytelling, as the former creative force behind the often hilarious YouTube channel Henry Productions. Josh is passionate about telling stories. This is evident in his energetic and engaging directorial style, and as the boundary pushing lead-editor at LampHouse Films. To Josh, story is king. He shared his philosophy with the following, “Every word we write, every shot, every light, every edit, grade, and animation – every decision we make exists to further the story. Film is more than the conveyance of information. It has the power to evoke strong emotion in the viewer. We craft every element of production to enhance the cinematic experience of the audience. Josh works with follow filmmaker Michael Schmucker who started Lamphouse Films (then msCinema) in 2009. Both are graduates of Dayspring Christian Academy.

Carry Me Home—A Tribute to Harriet Tubman will take place in Ryder Hall at LancasterHistory.org, 230 N President Avenue Lancaster on Thursday, Feb 16. A social gathering with refreshments will begin at 4pm, followed by the short film screening and panel discussion from 4:30-5:30. This event is free and open to the public.
