Fairbairn Family From New Jersey: A Nineteenth Century Family Register

A five-page family register gives data about Samuel B. Fairbairn and Martha McLain who married on March 25, 1856. They were married by Sam'l. Miller of Mount Holly, New Jersey.

Samuel B. and Martha (McLain) Fairbairn had four children, all of whom were baptized by Sam'l Miller. John Fairbairn was born June 26, 1857. Mary Ann Fairbairn was born June 4, 1859. Andrew Brown Fairbairn was born November 29, 1861, and Fanny Strawbridge Fairbairn was born April 1,1865.

The record goes back a generation, offering scant information about "John son of John & Martha Fairbairn." John Faibairn Jr. was born June 12, 1794. Jane Elizabeth, daughter of John and Mary Ann How, was born March 23, 1803. These were probably Samuel B. Fairbairn's parents.

From there, the information jumps to Andrew Brown Fairbairn, a son of John and Jane Elizabeth Fairbairn. Born March 5, 1826, Andrew Brown Fairbairn was the first of twelve children born to John and Jane Elizabeth (How) Fairbairn, who were married by Jacob J. January on May 25, 1824. Their other eleven children were: Mary Ann How Fairbairn, born April 28, 1828 and baptized by Preacher January; Jane Brown Fairbairn, born January 5, 1830 and baptized by Joseph Sandford; Sam'l. Blanchard How Fairbairn, born April 13, 1832 and baptized by Preacher January (probably Samuel B. Fairbairn who married Martha McLain as mentioned above); John Fairbairn Jr., born January 22, 1834 and baptized by Preacher Cuyler; Anna How Fairbairn, born August 4, 1835 and baptized by Preacher Cuyler; Martha January Fairbairn, born February 28, 1837 and baptized by Preacher Cuyler; James Cob How, born February 22, 1839 and baptized by Preacher Cuyler; Fanny Strawbridge Fairbairn, born August 5, 1842 and baptized by L. January; Frank Knorr Fairbairn, born on Christmas day in 1844 and baptized by J. L. January; William How Fairbairn, born February 16, 1846 and baptized by Preacher Thompson; and Henry Kolbeck Fairbairn, born October 16, 1847.

In addition to the marriages of Samuel B. to Martha (McLain) Fairbairn and of John and Jane Elizabeth (How) Fairbairn, other marriages listed in this record were those of William L. Potts to Mary Ann Fairbairn. They were married by L. Blanchard How of N. Brunswick, New Jersey on May 29, 1851. Also James C. Fairbairn was married to Martha B. Lash on March 11, 1858 by John L. Miller of Mount Holly, New Jersey, and Frank K. Fairbairn married Annie J. Bell on October 12, 1870. They were married by Theo. Stevens of Philadelphia.

Deaths recorded in this register say that Martha January Fairbairn died November 21, 1839 at the age of 2 years, 8 months, and 24 days. William How Fairbairn died March 5, 1847 at the age of 1 year and 17 days. Mary Ann How Potts died April 24, 1857 at the age of 28 years, 11 months, and 24 days. Andrew Brown Fairbairn died November 14, 1857 at the age of 31 years, 8 months, and 9 days. Jane Elizabeth Fairbairn died November 1, 1865 at the age of 62 years, 7 months, and 9 days. John Fairbairn died January 9, 1876 at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 28 days. And Jane Brown Fairbairn died May 28, 1877 at the age of 47 years, 4 months, and 23 days.
