Hosts ALLVETS Group

For Oral Histories

Viet Nam veteran Alan Frame will talk about his experiences during the
Wednesday, May 23, 2018 meeting of ALLVETS. This oral history will be
recorded at the Historical Society Museum, Library & Archives, 250 E.
Market St. at 7 p.m.

ALLVETS is a local non-profit with the goal of preserving the stories
of local veterans for the future. All veterans have stories, and
ALLVETS aims to capture them during taped sessions so they can remain
as a legacy for the people of York County to treasure.

These recordings, audio or audio/video, are open to the public. Each
recording will be approximately one hour, and veterans may pre-register
at no cost.

York Civil War Round Table Meeting:

The Battle of Trevilian Station

The York Civil War Round Table meeting will be held on May 16, 2018 at
the Historical Society Museum, Library & Archives, 250 E. Market St.,
York.

For this meeting Eric J. Wittenberg will speak on The Battle of
Trevilian Station. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., and is open to the

Mother’s Day

York County History Center

On Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018, at the York County History Center, there
are activities at both the Historical Society Museum, Library &
Archives and at the Colonial Complex for families large and small:

Colonial Court House (12 p.m. – 4 p.m.)  – FREE

First floor tours of the Golden Plough Tavern and General Horatio Gates
House (12 p.m. – 4 p.m.)- $2 ages 12 and older

Experience the Colonial Court House and learn the story of York’s role
as the nine month capital during the American Revolutionary War and the
important treaty with France signed in York in 1778, known as the
French Alliance. Discover the history of the building’s construction
during the nation’s bicentennial (1976). Tour the first floors of the
General Horatio Gates and Golden Plough Tavern, two of the oldest
buildings still standing in York.

And in case anyone is hungry, moms and families can stop in at the
Historical Society Museum at 250 E. Market St. to take a break from
browsing at the Olde York Street Fair. Visitors can enjoy a sweet treat
at the Friends’ Ice Cream Parlor on the first floor. Sundaes, floats,
brownies, coffee and soft pretzels will be on sale to benefit the
History Center. The Ice Cream Shoppe will be open from noon – 4 p.m.

The Museum Shop at the Historical Society will also be open, offering
unique gifts, jewelry, handbags, and books of local history interest,
plus home fragrances and accessories.

May Second Saturday Topic:

Are You Smarter Than a Curator?

The Second Saturday lecture series of the York County History Center
continues in May with a fun presentation by Facilities Director Dennis
Kunkle.  The lecture will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 10:30
a.m. at the Historical Society Museum, Library & Archives.

During this popular Second Saturday, Kunkle will share interesting
artifacts from the History Center collection, offering participants the
chance to guess what they may be or for what purpose they were used.
The talk always elicits some surprises and some good laughs.

All Second Saturday sessions are free and open to the public. No

For 2017 Award Nominations

The York County History Center is calling for nominations for their 2017 Awards, presented each fall to individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary efforts toward the preservation, interpretation, or promotion of the history of York County. This year marks the seventh year of the Awards, which are presented at the History Center Annual Meeting.

Nominees are sought for a total of five awards: the Heritage Profile Award (presented to an individual), and the Community Awards (presented to one business, one local history organization, and one government entity), along with the Outstanding Volunteer Award. Following are the award descriptions:

1. Heritage Profile Award: this award is given to recognize an individual who has made a lasting or significant contribution toward preserving, interpreting, promoting or researching the history of York County. The selection committee seeks an individual, living or deceased, who has demonstrated long-term dedication and personal commitment to this type of effort.

1. Community Award, Business: this award is given to a business that works to preserve history through a company history, a building preservation effort, a philanthropic project, or another endeavor that embraces the cause of preserving York County history.

1. Community Award, Local History Organization: this award goes to an association or organization which has contributed to preserving, interpreting, promoting, or researching the history of their county or region within York County.

1. Community Award, Government: recognizes outstanding contributions to the understanding of local history by municipalities without historical organizations. These activities may include community celebrations, commemorative publications, audiovisual materials, archival work, or community service.

1. Outstanding Volunteer Award: Volunteers nominated for this award set a high standard of volunteerism with their loyalty and dedication, providing inspiration for others to follow.

25^rd Annual Art & Leisure Auction

Features “Flashback Friday” Theme

The York County History Center is holding its 25th Annual Art & Leisure Auction Friday, April 28, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at the Historical Society Museum, Library & Archives at 250 E. Market St. The event is a major fundraiser for the History Center, and includes a tasting menu of food charitably provided by local caterers and restaurants. Also featured will be wine, beer and signature cocktails.

The evening’s activities include a silent auction during the food tasting and an exciting live auction directly after.

This year’s event will feature a “Flashback Friday” theme, with period dress encouraged (but not required). Revelers will create themed tables, dress their favorite decade, or even break into song!

Items for auction range from distinctive pieces of art and décor, to leisure trips and activities. Examples include a lobster dinner for eight in New Oxford, Pa., local art, and a week at a condo in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Also up for auction will be a fly fishing experience, seafood for 30 at Rockfish Public House, Penn State football tickets, and much more. The York County History Center is partnering with several area history organizations to present special programming that recognizes Black History Month 2017. This year’s events center around the theme of the Underground Railroad in York County, including a two-day regional symposium planned for March 31 and April 1, 2017. Details on all of these programs are available at www.yorkhistorycenter.org.

 Dr. Eric B. Holmes will present "The Amazing Discoveries and Frustrating Difficulties of African American Genealogical Research: The Story of a Family from the Northern Neck of Virginia". Second Saturday Lecture Series – “Henry Box Brown a Slave No More”

Author Judy Wolfman will tell the story behind her latest book A Slave No More. In this historical fiction work, Wolfman drew upon the true story of Henry “Box” Brown, a slave who shipped himself north from Virginia to Philadelphia in a 3 ft. x 2.5 ft. x 2 ft. box. Wolfman will discuss the incredible 27 hour journey Brown endured, as well as his life as a slave and later as an abolitionist speaker in the north.  Wolfman, a retired elementary teacher, has written 14 books, nine plays, and over 200 magazine articles and short stories.

All sites of the York County History Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, January 26-27, 2017, for winter cleaning. The museums will re-open on Saturday, January 28^th.
