Due to popular demand, the Illuminating the Word exhibition will be extended through Sunday, April 24, 2016. In addition to extending the exhibition end date, the Biggs Museum will host one of the 26 artists from the project, Suzanne Moore, on March 5, 2016 (read more below).

This hands-on workshop with Wilmington elite Calligrapher, Riva Brown, will introduce students to the unique lettering style similar to the body text of The Saint John's Bible. Materials included, open to all levels. Pre-registration required by February 17th.

Suzanne Moore, one of only two American artists chosen to create illuminations for The Saint John's Bible, will be at the Biggs Museum to discuss her work on this "Bible for the 21st century" over a span of 10 years, beginning in 2001. Pre-registration required.

Now on View: Peale Portraits Reunited 

Shakespeare once said, "The course of true love never did run smooth," and such is the case with a pair of lovers who have just been reunited in the Biggs Museum's permanent collection. The newest acquisition of a portrait by renowned artist Charles Willson Peale depicts Mrs. Jane Hunter Ewing and is a companion piece to the Peale portrait of Jane's husband, Maskell Ewing. The dual portraits were commissioned and created in 1787 and 88 and for centuries they were passed down through generations of the Ewing family. In 1992, however, the portraits were separated at auction. The Biggs is now thrilled to be able to reunite this pair after over two decades of separation.

Ending Sunday: New Discoveries

Catch this popular exhibition, located on the 3rd floor of the museum, before it ends on Sunday, February 14th. From his home in Cecil County, MD, Michael Robear grew up admiring, even emulating the members of the illustrious Wyeth family, especially Andrew Wyeth. The artist's cavalier use of water-based paints is contrasted by the unique frames he forges from metal.
