Denison Ledger: October 6, 1869 John W. Miner Receipt

Denison Scrapbook John W. Miner rent payment to Anson Brownw

If you have been following along with the Denison Scrapbook/ Ledger/ Stamp Collection blogs on Passed Time, you know there is some question over ownership of the Connecticut artifact. Obviously, the ledger changed hands many times during these intervening years, but the letters and receipts tucked within its pages, suggest a member of the Denison or Miner family was the original owner.

This receipt was taped onto a ledger page and is pretty self-explanatory. On October 6, 1869, a payment was made by John W. Miner (John Woodward Miner 1804-1878) to Anson Brown for three months of "store rent." Although Miner might have owned or shared proprietary rights of a store, the transaction might also be referring to storage or space necessary for Miner's shipping concerns. In 1869, when this transaction took place, Miner owned the schooner Cornelia.1  The store rent suggests Miner needed additional space for some business venture.

As you can imagine, the surname Brown is not particularly uncommon. One would think Anson is fairly rare, but there were just enough "Anson Browns" running around Connecticut during this period that identifying Brown proves difficult. I did, however, include links for some possibilities below. 147 years ago today...Best, Pat
